| Awards and Achievements
IPR News captures 11 AP Awards In perhaps the most singular achievement of the night, Senior News Correspondent Brian Beaver was named Best Reporter in the state for the sixth consecutive year. The IPR News Staff (Beaver, Stan Sollars and Stephanie Wiechmann) was recognized as the Outstanding News Operation for the second time (it was first received in 2006). First-place awards were earned by IPR News in the categories of Best General News, Best Enterprise Story, Best Feature, and Best Use of Radio Sound. In addition to the individual achievement represented by the Best Reporter award, Beaver earned a total of five first-place and two second-place AP awards. Sollars, winner of many awards in his long career with the station, earned a second-place award for Best Newscast (long-form). Wiechmann (IPR News’ newest reporter) garnered an Honorable Mention award for her short-form piece in the Best Newscast category. She joined IPR News in November of 2007 and hosts All Things Considered in addition to covering the local news. Terry Heifetz, IPR News Director, said “We are honored that our peers recognize the quality storytelling that comes from the IPR News Staff. What is really important is that it’s good news coverage for the members of Indiana Public Radio.” The Associated Press award plaques are already on display in a glass case in the hallway of the David Letterman Communication and Media Building at Ball State. [Note: Awards from the Society of Professional Journalists were announced too late to be included here. Look for SPJ and other awards in next month’s issue.]
